At the 2018 National Championships in Phoenix, Cesco and Payton led their team to a bronze medal finish in the Gold Bracket and both made the All-Tournament team. The foundation for their success was already established in Dallas earlier by their commitment to their team, the game, and their own progress.
The weekend of December 1-2, 2018, our TVP teams made the 3+ hour trip from the Washington DC metro area to the Lehigh Valley, PA for season opening competition. Our teams did well, we learned a bit more about ourselves, had fun, and will look forward to a good season.
In the gym on Sunday, cheering on his teammates, with no prospect of playing due to injury, was Payton Jacobs. Homework was to be done between matches. When his teammates were on the court, 3+ hours away from home, Payton was there to cheer them on.
TVP adopted the slogan “Practice WE. Be YOU” this past summer to honor the value of a team-focused culture nurtured by principled individuals who offer their own skill and spirit to the greater good. The slogan is on the TVP website and used it as a sign-off on emails, but on its own the words really do not offer specific road map to an unselfish, team-focused culture. Coach Ed Shilling writes about individual, selfish behavior in "Exposing a Thief of Individual and Team Success" but clarity also comes with examples of people who make a positive impact on their teams. Their character becomes our road map.
This past Sunday, Payton Jacobs once again defined for us by example how to practice WE.
Be YOU, Payton! Go TVP!
