Mary started playing volleyball in 8th grade, continued in high school in New Mexico, where she also excelled in basketball. Her team competed in AAU National Championships in basketball, and her high school team won the 1979 State Championship. Named First Team All-State basketball and volleyball in 1979-80 and 1980-81, Mary was also named to Street & Smith's preseason All-American watch list.
Mary was a four year student-athlete at Northwestern University, playing four years for the Wildcats on a basketball scholarship, and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
After graduate school, Mary earned her teaching certificate and taught math and coached at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Her volleyball and basketball teams reached the state playoffs. After moving to Maryland, Mary remained active in basketball and volleyball, primarily in rec leagues She was named volleyball coach at Wootton High School in 2001, coaching girls, boys and coed teams. Her 2007 girls team won the Maryland West Region championship and reached the Maryland State Championship match. Her 2013 team were also Maryland West Regional Champions and competed in the State semifinals.
Mary is a USAV CAP 1 certified coach, though coaching her three children, all of whom are volleyball players, gives her perspective on youth sports valued by TVP coaches, players and families. In addition to her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University, Mary earned a Masters degree in Bioengineering from Clemson University.
